Morning Ginger-Lemon Elixer

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 1 mug
Course: Drink
Author: Heather Nicholds
Start your day with a digestion- and metabolism-boosting elixir. Cinnamon is optional, but it’s been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, blood lipid levels, inflammation, blood pressure, and body weight. The smell of cinnamon may also boost brain activity. Have this first thing in the morning, before breakfast, as a powerful start to your day.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices fresh ginger
  • 1 wedge lemon
  • pinch cinnamon, optional
  • 1 tsp maple syrup, or coconut sugar (optional)

Instructions

  • Boil some water, and pour into a mug. Add the ginger, squeeze in the juice from the lemon, sprinkle in the cinnamon, and stir in the maple syrup (if using).
  • You could also grate the ginger, and just squeeze the juice into the mug for more ginger infusion.

Notes

Ginger is a well-known digestive aid, helping curb nausea and trapped gas. It also has very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols, which may reduce pain and improve mobility for those with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
